Ornate wooden carvings are still found in plenty in my home town of Samara. But they are of a dying breed as more and more of these fall victim of new construction.
They say that a learned observer can read these ornaments and tell some stories or meanings behind seemingly purely decorative elements. Some of these elements are seen on various houses, others are unique, some are rather straightforward while others are quite intricate and, therefore, leading to interpretations. Hearts, swans, horseshoes, dragons, flowers, roosters, spears, sun and even a clock dial – these are just some of the more or less clear images. When you walk down some streets you can’t help but stop and try to read into the lines knowing pretty well that your interpretation might be far from the real story.
